Interstate 35 Rest Area - Story County

Henkel Construction delivered the Iowa Department of Transportation a rest area that not only gives weary travelers a break, but it also gives them a glimpse back in time.

The rest area on I-35 just north of Ames takes you back through time in Iowa’s transportation history. As you drive up, decorated icons light the path and direct visitors to the front doors. The icon illustrations and art start the transportation theme that is carried throughout the building. Inside, you are surrounded by artists’ masterpieces on decorative block and tile depicting the different landmarks in Iowa’s transportation history. The images, designed by RDG Dahlquist Art Studio, highlight the various eras and modes of transportation that have been utilized in Iowa’s history.

In addition to the usual amenities offered at rest areas, the building provides office space for Department of Transportation workers and better lighting for increased security.

Upon exiting, visitors will notice terra cotta blocks on the exterior of the building highlighting the different cars that were actually manufactured in Iowa. In addition to the main building, Henkel constructed nine new picnic shelters which are all handicap accessible.
